What Is a Title Tag?

The title tag is THE most important factor in being able to dominate search engines (on the proviso that
you have already chosen your domain name). SEO specialists agree that this will always be so. The
<title> tag defines the site’s title and is required in all HTML/XHTML coded documents published on the
Internet.

In short, the title tag element:

• defines the title of the website in your browser
• displays a title for the webpage in search engine results
• provides a page title when it is added to favorites

Fixing your title tag is one of the fastest, and effective ways to increase your site’s SEO score pretty
much instantly. If you want to achieve better click through rates, higher rankings and better onsite SEO
in general then fixing your title tag is a must.

How Search Engines Rate Title Tags

As far as search engines go, your site’s title tags are more important than most webmasters believe.

With the ever-changing rules of search engine algorithms title tag elements are an important anchor to define your site’s purpose to search engine spiders. More important than your body text and backlinks, title tags are the first onsite SEO fix you should make.

What Goes in a Title Tag?

Title tags are the perfect place to strengthen your brand. They also build traffic with the help of carefully
placed keywords. If your intention is to drive relevant traffic to your site (and who wouldn’t want to),
then choosing an appropriate tag is a must. You can optimise a site with your company name, a niche keyword or a string of words (long-tail).

In summary use your MAIN KEYWORD(s) in your title tag, not just your company or website name.

A sitemap is a must-have “accessory” for any website. If your site is published on WordPress you can install Google’s sitemap.xml plugin. If you use other software there are plugins and add-ons to do the same.

These plugins will automatically rebuild your sitemap every time a new page is created and PING all major search engine. This is a great SEO add on. You can also visit Google’s Webmaster Tools, register for a free account and submit your sitemap right there and then.

Robots.txt

The Robots.txt file is a text-based file on your site. It tells search engine robots which pages you don’t want them to visit. Having said this, for SEO purposes the Robots.txt file is a must-have. It is also important to note that this text file is in no way a means to protect your site against crawlers and hackers.

If you site features sensitive data, and protected download pages you need to rely on tougher security measures than the simple Robots.txt file.

Position of Robots.txt

Your files must be hosted in the main directory for search engines to be able to crawl it. Your main directory is your http://mydomain.com/robots.txt location. If the bots don’t find the file there, they simply assume it isn’t existent on your site, and end up indexing everything they find, even the stuff they shouldn’t.

Robots.txt and SEO

For SEO purposes the Robots.txt file can have an impact on how your site is crawled and indexed, therefore making it another essential tool to have in your arsenal for search engine domination. Jump onto Google’s Webmaster Tools to create your robots.txt file.

I remember the first press release I ever put out. I generated around 25 clicks, a few links and that was the end of that. I thought to…

I remember the first press release I ever put out. I generated around 25 clicks, a few links and that was the end of that. I thought to myself ‘what’s the catch here?’ Obviously I was missing something from the equation, but what?

What I was missing was the traffic to the press release in the first place. It is all well and good putting out a press release, but if no body reads it there is no point.

Your main aim is to get listed in the number 1 position in Google news for your targeted keyword. This will mean that you show up on the first page of Google for your keyword.

Take a look at a search for ‘SEO’ paying particular attention to the 4th search result down the list ‘News for SEO’.

Doing a quick search the keyword SEO is searched for roughly 250,000 times each day, so far that particular result has been there for 2 days. That’s 500,000 views and only for the keyword SEO, this listing also comes up for most other SEO related keywords. I would estimate it more like 2,000,000 searches over the 2 days that this listing has come up. So basically that PR/Blog Post is going to get bucket loads of traffic.

So by now you should be seeing the serious potential of the press release!

Here’s what you need to do to get your Press Release listed on Googles first page:

1. Writing your Press Release

When writing your PR you need to think on page SEO.

Let’s take a look at the other high ranking results for ‘SEO’ with Google news and see what they have in common:

As you can see all of the top results have 2 major things in common.

- The title includes the keyword ‘SEO’

- The first sentence of the Press Release includes the keyword ‘SEO’

In a really competitive niche you can even use the keyword in the title twice, and twice within the first sentence.

These are the 2 main things you need to remember when writing up your press release, using your main keyword every 100 words would also be advisable.

2. Distributing your Press Release

After you have your press release written up, the next step is to find a good press release distribution service.

I have had excellent results with a service called 24-7 Press Release.

What makes a good press release services is that they get there PRs published on Google News, and the ability to post links within the PR itself. Unfortunately these 2 things are impossible to find in any free PR service.

I have found that out of all the PR services I have tried 24-7 Press Release gives the best results for the price. I only go for the $49 option.

It will take you a while to get the hang of it, but the results can be astonishing.

Good Luck.

To wrap it up in one sentence – link velocity is the rate at which you gain new links to your website. This is fast becoming one of Google’s biggest factors to determine relevancy and therefore search engine placement.

Why is link velocity important?

Google knows when you get new backlinks pointing to you website, that is their job!

Now if for example you have a website that is getting more backlinks each month – 25 backlinks the first month, 50 backlinks the next month, 75 backlinks the month after – It shows Google that your website is getting more popular at a steady rate. This is what they want to see.

If on the other hand you get 75 backlinks the first month and 0 the next month or two, Google will know that your site had a one time spike of popularity.

Now which do you think Google is most likely to favor? Obviously the website that is building steady and progressive “popularity” .

Keep this in mind for your next link building project.

It is not essential to add extra content to your link wheel periodically, however we would advise it. Adding around 100 extra words to each property every month will help maintain the site and over time build some authority from within search engines. A great way to find ideas for extra content is through Google News which is very relevant and up to date. Try punching in your keywords and see what comes up. Once you are done adding extra content make sure you “ping” each property using a free pinging website like http://feedping.com/.
